Queensland rolls out Digital Drivers Licence app state-wide

The phone, wallet, keys check just got easier.

Queensland’s new digital driver’s licence is now available statewide, allowing Queenslanders to use it as an official form of identification. Meaning you can finally leave your wallet at home, and just bring your phone and keys (if that!).

The Queensland Digital Licence app provides an easy and safe way for Queenslanders to validate their identity. The app can be used to store other Queensland Government-issued photo identification cards and marine licences.

Queensland follows South Australia and New South Wales in implementing an option to have a digital driver licence. Trials were held in two regional areas, firstly in the Fraser Coast in 2020 with a small selection of users and businesses, then it was expanded to anyone living in Townsville and the Fraser Coast in 2023.

With those results being overwhelmingly positive, the official app is available to all eligible users.

Where to download the Queensland Digital Driver Licence app:

The latest version of the app can be found on the respective mobile stores from Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.

Download the iOS app here.

Download the Android app here.

What credentials can be stored on the Digital Licence app?

The app allows you to store and access your driver licence, photo identification card/Adult Proof-of-Age card, and recreational marine licence.

Future plans are in place to allow additional Department of Transport and Main Roads and Queensland Government credentials to be added to the app.

Who can use the Digital Licence?

If you’re wanting to take advantage of the app, you’ll need at least one of the following: driver licence, photo identification card/Adult Proof-of-Age card, or recreational marine licence.

Your mobile device also needs to be using the latest version of iOS or Android operating system – or one of the 2 previous versions (to the latest).

Curiously, if you have only one name registered with TMR, you won’t be able to use the Digital Licence app, but they are working on resolving this issue.

Can I use the Digital Licence app everywhere?

According to the information released by the Queensland Government, you should be able to use the digital licence in place of your physical licence in Queensland. However, in other parts of Australia or overseas, they may not accept the digital licence.

The implementation of the Digital Licence app has been developed to meet the ISO international standard for driver licences on mobile device, which means that *technically* any jurisdiction that uses the same standard should have no problem accepting it.

You can learn more about the app directly from the Queensland Government info site here.
