CUPRA Born arrives with more range than rivals for $59,990 plus on-road costs

Cupra Born helps brand land over 2,000 orders

Zippy and not just on the road

Cupra is one of the latest brands to land in Australia, and it seems it is off to a solid start. While it took five-months for the brand to receive its first 1,500 orders, only four weeks was needed to achieve 350 orders for the Cupra Born battery electric vehicle.

The Born is a compact, rear-wheel drive model that boasts a range of 511km WLTP for under $60,000 before on-roads. It makes it one of the most affordable long-range EV’s on the market.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Cupra brand, it is a high-performance brand of Volkswagen. While well known in Europe, it is a new brand to land in Aus and attempt to break into the competitive market which has seen similar brands like Opel, try and fail.

Cupra currently is offering four models in Australia, which you’ve probably started to see pop up around town. We have certainly seen a handful on the streets of Brisbane. According to Cupra it isn’t intended to just be a compact car that can accelerate quickly because it’s an EV. Time and effort have been put into making it comparable to a hot hatch.

CUPRA Australia Director Ben Wilks said: “We wanted the CUPRA Born to arrive with pricing that bests comparable BEVs, but most importantly is comparable to the hot hatchbacks that Australians love and really engage with.”

“To combine a long 500km-plus EV range with instant electric performance, and controllable dynamics through the sharp steering and rear-wheel drive chassis, places the CUPRA Born in an exclusive part of the market.

“From range and pricing, to space and driver satisfaction, the Born will be the most important vehicle that CUPRA launches as it defines class leadership.”

Due to arrive in March/April 2023, it will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7 seconds, and have Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres, alongside a high level of standard technology and luxury for the price. Features include 170kW DC Fast Charging, 12inch infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 5.3inch digital cockpit, adaptive cruise control, 360 camera, and more.
