We’re seeing a lot of motor show news coming ahead of the ‘Auto Shanghai’ motor show which is on from the 21st to the 29th of April. We aren’t complaining, but isn’t that what the motor show is for?
Anyway. The Mercedes-Benz Concept GLA is their first compact-SUV and a vehicle which has been long wanted. It has been a number of years since BMW first introduced the X3 and X1 (we’ve had 2 generations!) and Audi introduced their Q5 and Q3. Up until this point Mercedes-Benz had been on the losing end for many young families because they simply didn’t offer a compact-SUV. I know from personal experience. However, we’re here and Mercedes-Benz has delivered a concept!
The Concept GLA brings the styling which we expressed our love for and technology that should make this a great competitor. In this particular concept the power comes from a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine which produces 155kW connected to the 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission. Being a SUV of sorts it also has the well liked 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system.
As you will be able to see in the images. The interior and exterior are very closely related to the A Class and B Class and in this circumstance we think it works. The Concept GLA shows a particular attitude that for a city car you’re going to enjoy it, especially with 20-inch wheels and tyres that are 255/45 R20 in size. There will be some who argue that it looks like a cross of an A Class and an X6. That’s not a bad thing is it?
When it comes to new technology the Concept GLA brings there are a few very interesting debuts. The first one is where the front headlamps are each fitted with a laser-beam projector. Cue Dr. EVIL! What these ‘Lasers’ do is provide light to drive with but they have the ability to project pictures or films!
That’s all we need you can stop now. Though it gets even better.
Fitted to the front roof rail are two cameras. These HD cameras not only can record 3D images but can also be removed and used as an action camera. Plus if it’s really dark the camera has a built in lamp.
So there you go. At the end of the day (post really) we have a compact-SUV concept from Mercedes and ‘laser-beam’ headlamps which can turn your driveway into a cinema.
