Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad), is a blue-collar mechanic who is framed for a crime he did not commit, and is set to race cross-country to avenge the death of a friend.
That’s the plot from Wikipedia for the video game adaption of the Need for Speed movie which is opened around Australia on Thursday, 13 March 2014, and you can win tickets to see the movie at the end of this post!
Since the games release in 1994, many like myself have grown up with the franchise and seen the game evolve from just an arcade racing game to one which has captivated even the most avid of car enthusiasts. Choosing a favourite game release with so many highlights like Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Need for Speed: Underground 2 and the latest Need for Speed: Rivals game is like being a kid in a candy store. I’ve poured so many hours into tuning Asian rice rockets, and throwing Italian exotics into impossible corners.
What ultimately brought the game to the big screen, according to EA, was passion. It was screenwriters John Gatins and his brother George who owns an auto shop in California that made this movie finally come to life.
Unfortunately it has taken 20 years for this movie to become a reality, but the wait was worth it. Need for Speed fans will see many of their most desirable game play vehicles in action with cars from all decades and parts of the world appearing in the movie.
Just a few of the cars, which you may spot in the trailer below, include:
- Shelby Mustang – developed just for the movie with wide body and 20 inch alloy wheels.
- ’69 Ford Gran Torino
- ’68 Chevy Camaro
- ’66 Pontiac GTO
- Koenigsegg Agera R
- Lamborghini Sesto Elemento
- GTA Spano
- Bugatti Veyron
- McLaren P1
- Saleen S7
Being a movie, multiples of each super car were needed with each serving a specific purpose and rigged to accept camera platforms. This was going to be a problem as:
“There are only a few super cars in the world and they’re not really camera-friendly,” explains Scott Waugh, the director of the movie. “You’re not going to drill into the side of a two-and-a-half-million-dollar car … they’re art pieces, that’s what everyone forgets. You’re going to replicate it to wreck it so the real one is still there.” So due to their exorbitant price tags (over $1 million apiece) and the fact that they could not be placed in situations where damage was possible, replica cars would have to be built.
Luckily the manufacturers were enthusiastic to get involved and shared confidential CAD specs with Reel Industries in Los Angeles who then created 15 chasses and fiberglass shells for each make and model which could then be swapped out for the real vehicle.
The Koenigsegg, Bugatti and McLaren all had 105-inch wheel bases, the Lamborghini a 101-inch wheel base, and the Spano a 100-inch wheel base; and with the Koenigsegg, a high-performance mid-engine two-seater which can reach speeds up to 270 miles per hour, 10 cars were needed.
The Ford Mustang which is featured in the movie was designed and built just for the Need for Speed movie will actually be headed to the Barrett-Jackson Auction Block. The Mustang features a custom Ford designed wide body, unique Forgiato 22-inch alloy wheels, enlarged lower grille, new air intakes, extended rocker panels, twin snorkel hood and low profile mirrors. All of the proceeds from the auction will go to charity.

“Most looking forward to seeing the Sesto Elemento because, well look at it. Also am an even bigger fan after sitting in one.
Most looking forward to seeing destroyed…none. That will probably be the worst part of the movie, having to watch dream cars getting ruined and wrecked. Not sure I will cope well :(”
“Can’t wait to see the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento, have loved Lamborghini’s ever since my first ride in a 1972
Really want to see the Bugatti Veyron get totaled. It would be such an amazing cinema moment as the audience lets out a “Oh Sh*t” watching it get utterly destroyed.”
“1. Koenigsegg Agera R
2. Bugatti Veyron (ugly)
Let me win Ashley
