Volvo has unveiled a new concept car called the Volvo Concept XC Coupé. It’s a great looking car that would fit perfectly for what a 20-something (like me) with its great looking lines, storage space and overall feeling of it should have played a starring role in Oblivion.
The Volvo Concept XC Coupé is one of three concept cars designed by Volvo to showcase their new Scalable Product Architecture. This architecture is about achieving a collision-free future with no fatalities or series injuries in a modern Volvo product by 2020.
Definitely a big goal, but it could be possible.
For the Concept XC Coupé, Volvo set out to show that a safe car doesn’t have to be ugly or compromising in anyway. If only Toyota realised that their hybrids didn’t have to be ugly to make a point.
The four-seater concept sits on big 21-inch wheels and pumped up wheel-arches that help with its sleek looks. Its front axle and its relationship with the dashboard are that of a long distance relationship, giving it an almost roadster like look.
Any adventurous type will appreciate the inclusion of high-tech sports gear and protective items throughout the concept. You know, to really accentuate the sportiness of this car.
From the photos you can see the inclusion of several orange bits and bobs, plus matte rubber mouldings to not just provide a visual element but also some extra function.
Of course, there are the usal skid plates, rails and side mouldings to provide that bit of extra protection when venturing off sealed roads.
Whilst this concept in some eyes really provide anything ground breaking, it is refreshing to see that Volvo are looking like they are on the right track. Not too long ago, a lot of what Volvo was producing was functional, but really ugly.
Looking at some of their most recent production cars and concepts and you would will find that the engineering and design team have finally started to work together.
If Volvo were to get serious about this concept, we think they would have a serious contender up against the Mercedes GLA.
